I went to St. Cloud State on a hockey scholarship and played one game. At Christmas, grades came and I had failed a class, so became academically ineligible. (The next time I played hockey I was facing Wayne Gretzky at the Edmonton Coliseum on NBC sports!) I finished my college years at Concordia - St. Paul, where I played baseball for two years. I was married to Marsha Schendel (MVHS) during my junior year.
At the encouragement of Dave Phillips (Young Life Leader, remember him?) and Whitey Aus, I attended Luther Seminary and received an M.A in youth ministry. I spent seven years as an area director for Young Life, first in Rochester and then in Stillwater. Then I returned to Luther Seminary for an M.Div. degree and then was ordained as a Lutheran pastor.
My calls were in Sioux Falls South Dakota (twice), Salem Oregon, and Stillwater. I finished my ministry by doing interim ministry these last five years, and retired at the end of July, 2018.
Marsha and I have two adult children: Kyle works for Thrivent, is married to Melissa, and they have two kids, Gordie and Sonia. Kindra is married to Chris England, and she teaches high school English at North St. Paul High School. Kindy and Chris have three little boys; Rory, Felix and Crosby.
Marsha (retired elementary teacher) and I sold our Stillwater home and moved to a detached town home in July of 2018. Life is good! God is good!
